Fenix Museum of Migration is not just a museum. It is a journey through stories about love and farewell, about coming home and feeling at home. Migration is central, seen through the eyes of artists from around the world.
The museum is in a former harbor warehouse on Katendrecht. From these docks, millions of people once left for America and Canada. At the same time, newcomers arrived here who helped shape Rotterdam into the city it is today.
Inside you see art, photographs and installations about migration, past and present. The eye catcher is the Tornado, a double twisted staircase that leads to a panoramic roof with views over the Maas and the skyline. That alone is worth the climb.
Tasting and meeting
At Plein, the covered city square, something is always happening. Rotterdam locals organize markets, performances, language classes and shared meals. You can also just sit, read or have a coffee.
For food and drinks you are in the right place here. At O Anatolian Café and Bakery you eat Turkish dishes and bread by star chef Maksut Aşkar. On the quay in summer you can get ice cream at Granucci Gelato, a family business that has made Italian gelato since 1929. In the Espresso Bar on the first floor you drink coffee with a view.
In the museum shop you find books, tableware and gifts around the theme of home and connection, often made with local makers.
