THEATER WALHALLA.

Professional performing arts in an intimate, welcoming setting.

Say Katendrecht and you say Walhalla. Not only because of the performances, but because of the atmosphere. Since 2008, Harry-Jan and Rachèl van Olm have been building a place where everyone feels welcome. Young or old, regular visitor or curious newcomer. Walhalla has several venues with a plush, intimate feel where you sit close to the performers. They are spread across and around the festival-like Deliplein, with its colorful lights. The largest space is Kantine Walhalla with 172 seats. The smallest venue has 72 seats. Intimate spaces, and often sold out quickly.

What makes Walhalla typically Walhalla?
Harry-Jan: “When we started, we were almost the only ones here. We have always held on to our individuality. No chains, no barriers. Just a place where you can experience something special. We now have multiple locations: Kleine Walhalla on Deliplein, Kantine Walhalla by the bridge with the Metro Walhalla club venue in the basement and our foyer café on the ground floor. We also have Werkplaats Walhalla on Tolhuisstraat, which serves as a production house as well as a theater venue. Each location has its own character and programming.”

Tell us about the performances.
“Walhalla is a springboard for young and emerging talent. We give artists the opportunity to gain their first stage experience. We present nearly 400 unique performances each year, broad and eclectic. A different artist every night. That fits our mission: to spark imagination and let audiences leave the theater with new ideas. Thinking about something new, laughing out loud, or seeing the world from a different perspective.”

What does a cultural night out on Katendrecht look like?
“Cross the Rijnhaven Bridge and you arrive at a festive square filled with lights and a small-scale atmosphere. There is plenty to discover in terms of food as well. When you step inside, the excitement begins. Lights down, spotlight on. A sense of anticipation in the audience, wonder and applause. Afterwards, you can head back to the square and continue your evening. We love to connect, also through events such as King’s Day and the Day of the Rotterdam Trios. Walhalla belongs to the Kaap. And the Kaap belongs to Walhalla.”

Tip from Harry-Jan:

"The iconic Tattoo Bob has a mini museum dedicated to tattooing. He has been based on the Kaap for nearly a century. Step inside and enter the world of tattoos and piercings. Experience the atmosphere of sailors who once had anchors with hearts tattooed on their arms."
